This sweet little house is my next project. A little nervous and a whole lot excited about this one. It is my very first attempt at flipping a home. I’ve renovated for myself, built a rental home from the ground up, and helped friends and family reimagine their spaces. But a flip? Never! However, there is a first time for everything and I am totally up for the challenge.
One big challenge with flipping a home is choosing all the fixtures and finishes because they must have broad appeal. It is much easier to design a space for a specific person or family because their desires narrow down options. But how do I figure out what appeals to the masses? There’s the usual common sense advice of “stick with neutrals” and “avoid crazy patterns”. But I’m wondering if everyone else feels the same way I do when it comes to “safe design,” which is that it is a little too homogenous. Is anyone else sick of white subway tile, white marble countertops and white shaker cabinets in all spec home kitchens? Or is it classically beautiful so everyone still wants it? How about the farmhouse style which, thanks to Joanna Gaines, has become immensely popular? If I put shiplap everywhere will everyone love it? Hmmm…
Here’s what I decided to do to get some answers: post Instagram polls and have my followers help me choose the fixtures and finishes. I will take preliminary things into consideration, like budget and overall suitability for the space, and narrow down the options to two, maybe three. Then I’ll present them in Instagram (IG) polls and see what everyone thinks. Let’s see how it goes! I think it’ll be fun! Follow along @urbanhausdesigns if you’re up for it!
